Install The Latest VLC In Ubuntu Via PPA [Quick Tip]

<div style="text-align: justify;">Quick tip: new <a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/">VLC</a> versions are released quite frequently and even though some don't introduce any new features, there are important bug fixes in each release (you can find the VLC changelogs <a href="http://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/2.0.7.html">HERE</a>). <b>If you want to always have the latest stable VLC version in Ubuntu, here are some PPAs you can use</b>.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UnBxSQs5dS8/UbXCcpM9ebI/AAAAAAAAPec/yfVbKneL3fc/s1600/vlc.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UnBxSQs5dS8/UbXCcpM9ebI/AAAAAAAAPec/yfVbKneL3fc/s320/vlc.png" width="320" /></a></div></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu 13.04</b>: you can install the latest VLC media player (2.0.7 at the time I'm writing this article) by using Nate Muench's VLC <a href="https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/vlc">PPA</a> which contains VLC backports from Debian Unstable / Experimental.<b> To add the PPA and install the latest VLC in Ubuntu 13.04, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install vlc</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10:</b> Nate Muench mantains another <a href="https://launchpad.net/~n-muench/+archive/vlc2">PPA</a> with the latest VLC media player backported from Debian, for Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04. <b>To add the PPA and install the latest stable VLC, use the following commands:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc2<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install vlc</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu 13.10, 13.04, 12.10 and 12.04:</b> an alternative PPA you can use is the "VLC Daily build of stable branch" <a href="https://launchpad.net/~videolan/+archive/stable-daily">PPA</a>. This PPA doesn't have the latest stable VLC version but it provides builds from the stable branch, so you may occasionaly find some small bugs but if that happens, they should be fixed quickly. The advantage of this PPA over the other two mentioned above is that it has packages for more Ubuntu versions and also, it's updated more frequently since it doesn't depend on the packages being available in Debian before uploading them to the PPA. <b>To add this PPA and install the latest VLC in Ubuntu, use the commands below:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install vlc</code></pre>

Audience Media Player Getting Close To A New Release, Help Test It!

The second Audience release is getting close and its developers have invited users to help test it</b>. There aren't any major new features since the previous release, but a large amount of bugs have been fixed recently. So if you can help test it or just want to give it a try, read on.</div><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Audience comes with a beautiful, minimalistic clutter-based interface and very few configuration options and is designed to play videos without getting in your way. The progress bar (which comes with previews support) along with a play/pause button, a sidebar (from where you can access the playlist and language / subtitles) toggle button and an add to playlist button are displayed at the bottom and are set to autohide by default. A few more settings can be tweaked by using Dconf editor (<i>org > pantheon > audience</i>). </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a rel="image_group" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R1ilMPynAfg/UVmYyqmy2UI/AAAAAAAAOzA/LuyXAct8A3Y/s1600/audience_2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-R1ilMPynAfg/UVmYyqmy2UI/AAAAAAAAOzA/LuyXAct8A3Y/s320/audience_2.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">As you can notice from the Dconf path above, Audience is designed for the elementary OS desktop (Pantheon) and it will probably become the default media player in the future. But of course, you can use it in any desktop environment.</div><br /><br /><h2>Install Audience</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Before proceeding, please note that this PPA has quite a few elementary packages that are unstable so read the PPA description before adding it. </b></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Audience can be installed in Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 or 12.04 (and obviously, elementary OS and other Ubuntu-based Linux distributions such as Linux Mint, etc.) by using the elementary Daily PPA:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/daily<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install audience</code></pre><b><br />Arch Linux</b> users can install the latest Audience via <a href="https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/audience-bzr/">AUR</a>.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And a note from Cody Garver, the main Audience developer, on how to report bugs for Audience: </div><br /><blockquote class="tr_bq">We only ask that users test videos that do not play/produce errors in Totem before submitting a bug to make sure it's Audience-specific.</blockquote><br /><b>Report any bugs you may find @ <a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/audience">Launchpad</a>.</b><br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;"><i>Thanks to Cody Garver for  the tip!<b> </b></i></div>

Xnoise Media Player Gets New Album Art View

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Xnoise 0.2.13 has been released today, introducing a new Album Art view,</b> similar to the one available in Banshee or in Rhythmbox through the <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/coverart-browser-rhythmbox-plugin.html">CoverArt Browser plugin</a>, along with a <b>new application icon</b> created by <a href="https://plus.google.com/101681698460010159459/posts">Reda Lazri</a>.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The new Album Art view can be accessed from the toolbar/menu or by using the CTRL + B keyboard shortcut.
