Steam Machines: Valve Announces New Living-Room Hardware That Runs SteamOS

For this, you must complete a quest before October 25: join the Steam Universe community group, agree to the Steam Hardware Beta Terms and Conditions, make 10 Steam friends, create a public Steam Community profile and play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode. Once you complete these steps, you'll be awarded a special badge and be among the pool of people that can be chosen to test the new hardware.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to Valve, the new Steam machines will be "completely upgradable and open" and starting next year, there will be multiple machines to choose from, made by different manufacturers. The Steam Box should be one of these "living room machines" so will Valve finally announce it in one of the two remaining announcements? Portal Game Now Officially Supported On Linux, Exits Beta [Steam]

<b>Portal, the popular first-person puzzle game developed by Valve, has moved out of beta and is now <a href="http://steamcommunity.com/games/Portal/announcements/detail/2146245233461347788">officially</a> supported on Linux.</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/portal-linux.jpg"><img alt="Portal game Linux" src="http://img.netupd8.com/portal-linux_thumb.jpg" /></a></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">Released in 2007, the <i><b>"</b>hybrid of FPS style and a new genre of spacial brain teasers</i>" was acclaimed as one of the most original games of the year. Steam March Survey Stats: Linux Usage Has Decreased

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b>In <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/03/steam-february-survey-stats-linux.html">February</a>, the Valve Steam Hardware & Software Survey stats have revealed that 2.02% of Steam users run Linux, a huge increase from January (1.12%). Another reason could be the addition of many new Linux distributions: for February, only Ubuntu, Linux Mint and "Linux 64" were displayed in the stats but for March you'll notice a pretty big list of Linux distributions, including Gentoo, Debian, openSUSE, Arch Linux, elementary OS, Fedora, Chakra, Sabayon and so on, of which many show up with 0%.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As expected, in March, Ubuntu continues to have the most Steam for Linux users with 1.15% of all Steam OSes. Linux Mint comes in second, with 0.21%, followed by "Linux 64 bit" with 0.11% ("Linux 64bit" are probably Linux distributions that aren't detected by Steam) and Arch Linux with 0.04%.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Judging by these stats, the Steam Linux market share doesn't seem to be able to go past ~2% but we should see a huge increase once Steambox is released. <div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a href="https://code.google.com/p/pidgin-opensteamworks/">Pidgin OpenSteamWorks</a> is a plugin that allows you to chat with your Steam friends from Pidgin</b>.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Why use it? Well, if you're both a Steam and Pidgin user, you may find it more convenient to chat with your Steam friends from Pidgin, without having to open Steam, especially since the Steam Linux client is very resource hungry.</div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">The plugin has initially used Open Steamworks, an open implementation of Valve's Steamworks API but that required Steam to run in the background so with version 1.0, the plugin has switched to the Steam mobile API so it's no longer needs Steam to work.<br /><br />The Steam plugin for Pidgin plugin is available for Linux and Mac OSX and there's also an older version available for Windows (however, the old Windows version requires Steam to run in the background).</div><br /><br /><h2>How to install and use Pidgin OpenSteamWorks plugin</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ubuntu 13.04, 12.10 and 12.04 users can install the Pidgin OpenSteamWorks plugin by using a PPA:</b></div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lasall/pidgin-opensteamworks<br />sudo apt-get update<br />sudo apt-get install pidgin-opensteamworks</code></pre><b>That's it for Ubuntu users.</b><br /><br />Note:<i> I've tested it on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit only.<b> </b></i><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>For other Linux distributions</b>, <a href="https://code.google.com/p/pidgin-opensteamworks/downloads/list">download</a> the .so file (libsteam-*.so for 32bit or libsteam64-*.so for 64bit) and copy it under one of the folders below:</div><ul><li><i>~/.purple/plugins</i> (if that folder doesn't exist, create it) for your user or </li><li><i>/usr/lib/pidgin/</i> to install it system-wide</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">You'll also have to download the plugin icons (icons.zip), extract  them and copy the two folders (16 and 48) to<i>  /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/protocols/</i> . And speaking of Linux and MacOS, recently, the Defender's Quest Steam Linux sale results were made <a href="http://www.fortressofdoors.com/2013/02/steam-linux-sale-results.html">public</a>, revealing that Linux users have made 16% of the sales, while MacOS users only 6%, showing once again that Linux shouldn't be underestimated.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to the survey stats, the most used Linux distribution is Ubuntu 12.10 64bit (0.71%), followed by Ubuntu 12.10 32bit (0.19%) and Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 64bit (0.31%). In total, Ubuntu accounts for 1.71% of the whole Steam OS market share, followed by Linux Mint (which, by the way, is the only Linux distribution in the stats, besides Ubuntu and a generic "Linux 64bit" with 0.14%) with 0.17%.
