How To Disable Amazon / Shopping Suggestions And Other Unity Scopes In Ubuntu 13.10

<div style="text-align: justify;">In Ubuntu 13.04, if you want to get online search results in Dash without shopping suggestions, you can simply remove the Unity Shopping lens. In Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) you can't remove the Shopping lens but there is another way to achieve the same thing and it seems this isn't obvious because I've seen quite a few users complaining about it. Done<br />Note, selecting 'unity-scope-home' instead of 'unity-lens-shopping'<br />0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.</blockquote><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If you remove <i>unity-scope-home</i>, which was selected instead of <i>unity-lens-shopping</i>, you won't get any results in Dash, not even for installed applications.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You can't remove the Unity Shopping Lens in Ubuntu 13.10 because there's no Shopping lens. Ubuntu 13.10 comes with a feature called <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2013/06/unity-smart-scopes-feature-lands-in.html">Unity Smart Scopes</a> (or "100 scopes") which uses a huge list of scopes to display results in Dash and among these, there are some used for shopping. Unity Privacy Indicator: Quickly Enable Or Disable Dash Online Search Results Or Zeitgeist Logging

Nautilus 3.6: How To Clear The Recent Files List (Or Disable It)

<div style="text-align: justify;"><b><a title="Install Nautilus 3.6 Ubuntu" href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/how-to-install-nautilus-36-or-patched.html">Nautilus 3.6</a> comes with a "Recent" sidebar item (left sidebar: <i>Places > Recent</i>) which displays recently used files: documents, pictures, music, videos and so on. </b></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent.png"><img alt="Nautilus Recent files" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This is a pretty big privacy issue because there's no option in System Settings (GNOME Control Center) to clear the Nautilus recent files list or to disable it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>So here's how to clear this Nautilus Recent files list and optionally, how to completely disable it.</b></div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>Clear the Nautilus Recent Files list</h2><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent-cleared.png"><img alt="Nautilus Recent files clear" src="http://img.netupd8.com/nautilus-recent-cleared_thumb.png" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To clear the Nautilus "Recent" files</b>, you need to remove the "<i>~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</i>" file - to do this from the command line, copy/paste the command below in a terminal:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>rm ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</code></pre><br />Then, log out an log back in. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Restarting Nautilus didn't always work in my test, that's why I've recommended logging out and logging back in. After removing the "<i>~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel</i>" file, you can also clear the Recent files list by opening a file that's not in your recent files list. I know, this weird, but that's how it seems to work or at least, that's the behaviour I've experienced in my test.</div><br /><br /><br /><h2>Disable the Nautilus Recent Files list</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>To permanently disable any recent files from showing up in the Nautilus Recent sidebar item</b>, open the "<i>~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini</i>" file with a text editor:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>gedit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini</code></pre><br />and under "[Settings]", add the following lines:<br /><pre class="source-code"><code>gtk-recent-files-max-age=0<br />gtk-recent-files-limit=0</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>If this file does not exist, create it</b>. Make sure the header says "[Settings]" and not "Settings". Ubuntu 12.10 Gets Option To Disable Online Search Results In Dash [Unity 6.8.0]
