He also mentions that the <b>daily ISOs will continue to be published as usual</b> and they will be automatically 'smoke' tested to make sure there are no more broken installers on the published images.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Further more, the freezes (for instance, when the Feature Freeze takes place, the developers stop introducing new features or packages and concentrate on fixing bugs only) have been moved back a few weeks so the development will continue until late in the release cycle.</div><br />The Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail schedule should now look like this:<br /><ul><li>March 28th: beta release</li><li>April 25th: final Ubuntu 13.04 release</li></ul><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>These changes will only affect the main Ubuntu flavor</b> (with Unity), while the other flavors like <b>Xubuntu, Kubuntu, etc., will have complete control over their releases</b> so we might see different release schedules for each Ubuntu flavor.</div>

There are also some optional steps to install the GNOME 3 applications which are missing from Ubuntu GNOME Remix.</div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>sudo apt-get install full-gnome3-experience</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">No, the command in the header won't work, but you'll get a complete GNOME 3 experience in Ubuntu 12.10 by following the steps below.</div><br /><b>1. Install the Ubuntu GNOME packages</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">You can simply install the "gnome-shell" package if GNOME Shell is all you want, but if you want the whole GNOME 3 desktop which includes the default applications as well as the default settings, use the command below:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop ubuntu-gnome-default-settings</code></pre>When prompted, select GDM as the default display manager. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">If you already had GDM installed and the package manager didn't prompt you to choose between LightDM and GDM or you've selected LightDM by mistake, you can run the following command:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm</code></pre><div style="text-align: justify;">And select GDM instead of LightDM (more about changing the display manager, <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/07/how-to-switch-between-gdm-lightdm-or.html" title="How To Switch Between GDM, LightDM Or KDM In Ubuntu [Quick Tip]">here</a>). You can use LightDM with GNOME Shell, but you won't get the complete GNOME 3 experience - for instance, GNOME Shell won't use the new GNOME 3.6 lock screen.</div><br />It is also a good idea to remove the "ubuntu-settings" package:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-settings</code></pre><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Note that removing this package, the "ubuntu-desktop" package will be removed as well. This is just a meta package and your system shouldn't be affected by it.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The "ubuntu-settings" package is used to set various Ubuntu defaults, like the window button order, which Rhythmbox plugins are enabled by default and so on.</div><br /><br /><h3>Optional</h3><br /><b>2. Install missing GNOME 3 packages</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Even though they are part of the default GNOME 3 application stack, GNOME Documents and Boxes are not installed by default with the ubuntu-gnome-desktop package. Install them using the following command:</div><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo apt-get install gnome-documents gnome-boxes</code></pre><b>Note: Boxes is only available on 64bit due to a bug!</b><br /><br /><b>3. Upgrade GNOME Control Center, Nautilus, Totem and other GNOME 3 packages to version 3.6.x</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Some packages in the Ubuntu 12.10 repositories aren't updated to the latest 3.6.x version. So, like we <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/how-to-install-nautilus-36-or-patched.html" title="How To Install Nautilus 3.6 Or Patched Nautilus 3.4 In Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal">wrote a while back</a>, you can use the GNOME3 PPA to upgrade these applications.</div><br />Add the PPA using the following command:<br /><pre class="linux-code"><code>sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3</code></pre><br />Then, launch Software Updater from Dash / menu and use it to upgrade your packages.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The packages that will be upgraded once you add the PPA are: GNOME Control Center 3.6.3, Aisleriot 3.6.0, Brasero 3.6.0, Nautilus 3.6.3 and Totem 3.6.2. The PPA also provides Transmission 0.7.1, Transmageddon 0.23 and Sound Juicer 3.5.0.</div><br /><br /><b>4. Remove overlay scrollbars</b><br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">One thing I've noticed after following the steps above myself, is that GNOME Shell continues to use Ubuntu's overlay scrollbars. <div style="text-align: justify;"><b>If you're experiencing screen tearing in Xfce 4.10, you'll be glad to know there's a patch that fixes this, which you can install right away.</b></div><br /><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">The patch adds Sync to VBlank support to the Xfwm compositor and while it's not perfect, it should fix most of the tearing on computers using Intel GPUs (might work with AMD as well). Here are the pros and cons of using this patch, according to the <a href="https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8898">bug report</a> where the patch was submitted:</div><br /><b>Pros:</b><br /><ul><li>No tearing when dragging windows</li><li>No tearing when resizing windows</li><li>No tearing when using the flash plugin in firefox</li><li>No tearing in windowed OpenGL applications</li><li>Uses less resources since the fps is limited to the display refresh rate</li></ul><br /><b>Cons:</b><br /><ul><li>Tested only using Intel gpu, but might also work with AMD. All of them with permanent horizontal screen tearing. The same issue with flash videos in Youtube. With the default Xfwm4 and the compositor off, the tearing is even worse.<br /><br />Then, i download and install your Xfwm4 patched deb. And enable the Vsync [...].<br /><br />After restarting the wm, with the compositor "on", I performed the test with the same videos, and the reproduction is practically perfect! <div style="text-align: justify;"><b>SNA</b> is a 2D acceleration architecture for the open source Intel Linux graphics driver that provides improved X.Org driver performance, and thus, better desktop user experience. This time, let's do things differently!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>I'll start by sharing with you the first things I did after installing the latest Ubuntu 12.10 and you, the readers, can post comments, telling us what you've installed / customized / tweaked after installing 12.10, no matter what Ubuntu flavour you're using.</b></div><br /><br /><a name='more'></a><br /><h2>What I did after installing Ubuntu 12.10</h2><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The first thing I did after installing Ubuntu 12.10 was to restore my PPAs backup from Ubuntu 12.04. That's right, I'm addicted to PPAs. That's because, even though Ubuntu 12.10 has the latest version of most packages, there are some apps which aren't available in the official repositories that I can't live without. For this I've used <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/y-ppa-manager-0092-released-with-new.html">Y PPA Manager</a> which imports the GPG keys automatically and can also update the PPAs that work with the latest Ubuntu release.</div><br /><br /><h3>Firefox extensions and webapps.</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iDyFbqTcklY/UIBpO21Z20I/AAAAAAAALE8/gm5m3oRFYpI/s1600/firefox-extensions.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="126" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iDyFbqTcklY/UIBpO21Z20I/AAAAAAAALE8/gm5m3oRFYpI/s320/firefox-extensions.png" width="320" /></a></div><h3>  </h3>I'm using Firefox because it works better for me with a large number of open tabs (especially since there's an <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/04/how-to-load-app-tabs-on-demand-in.html">option not to load tabs until clicked</a>). I only use three addons: <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/">Adblock Plus</a>, <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-badge/">Tab Badge</a> (adds a a small badge to your tabs to alert you when you have notifications for websites like Facebook, Google Plus, etc.) and <a href="https://lastpass.com/">LastPass</a> (for better password security and sync).<br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7LJY-lzE0EE/UIBsxSWQQWI/AAAAAAAALF0/C7t2QOlUUSM/s1600/webapps.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7LJY-lzE0EE/UIBsxSWQQWI/AAAAAAAALF0/C7t2QOlUUSM/s320/webapps.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">And speaking of browsers, I've also installed some <b>webapps</b> (they work with both Firefox and Chromium, though Chromium requires <a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/unity-chromium-extension/">an extension</a> available in the repositories):</div><ul><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/unity-webapps-googleplus/">Google Plus</a> - I don't want to miss any posts so the notifications provided by the Google Plus webapp are really useful;</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/unity-webapps-facebookmessenger/">Facebook</a> - integrates Facebook with the Messaging Menu, without using a separate application. Sweet!</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/unity-webapps-gmail/">Gmail</a> - this is a really useful webapp too as it displays the number of unread emails as a badge on the Unity luncher and in the Messaging Menu, along with new email notifications (though the notifications are currently broken for me using Firefox). </li></ul>More about the new webapps, <a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/unity-webapps-available-in-ubuntu-1210.html">HERE</a>. <br /><ul></ul><br /><br /><h3>AppIndicators.</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kMeKUk5SRMc/UIE7w-GJ1aI/AAAAAAAALJE/2sSGzFer1Cs/s1600/indicators.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="115" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kMeKUk5SRMc/UIE7w-GJ1aI/AAAAAAAALJE/2sSGzFer1Cs/s320/indicators.png" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">I was telling you there are some applications which I can't live without. Well, many of them are appindicators:</div><ul><li><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/my-weather-indicator-gets-new-forecast.html">My Weather Indicator</a> - weather on the panel is a must for me, a feature that Ubuntu should really add by default;</li><li><a title="google calendar ubuntu appindicator" href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/02/calendar-indicator-displays-google.html">Google Calendar Indicator</a> - I use Google Calendar a lot, and this appindicator is very useful, displaying future events, notifications and more;</li><li><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/2-ways-to-temporarily-disable.html">Caffeine</a> - because there's nothing more annoying than watching a video / movie and having the screen lock pop-up in the middle of it;</li><li><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/glippy-clipboard-manager-gets-files-and.html">Glippy</a> - in my opinion, a clipboard manager is a must. Glippy is my favourite, but any will do;</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/nautilus-dropbox/">Dropbox</a> - Ubuntu One is nice, but there are some features for which I prefer Dropbox. It can be installed from the Ubuntu repositories repositories too.</li></ul><br /><br /><h3>Other applications.</h3><ul><li><a href="http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/virtualbox-420-released-with-support.html">VirtualBox</a> -  for testing the next Ubuntu release and other Linux distributions of course, something I need for WebUpd8;</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/gnome-tweak-tool/">GNOME Tweak Tool</a> - for changing the GTK / Window theme, because at the time I've installed Ubuntu 12.10, the other tools like Ubuntu Tweak, MyUnity, etc. didn't yet support 12.10 (and they still don't fully support it yet);</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/compizconfig-settings-manager/">CCSM</a> - since Ubuntu Tweak and the other tweaking tools don't fully support Ubuntu 12.10 yet, CCSM is the way to go right now if you want to tweak various Unity aspects;</li><li><a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/shutter/">Shutter</a> - the best screenshot tool for Linux, is also one of the first applications I install since I need it for the new WebUpd8 posts;</li><li>Movies / music: <a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/ubuntu-restricted-extras/">Ubuntu Restricted Extras</a> is a must. And for me, so are <a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/smplayer/">SMplayer</a> and sometimes <a href="https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/vlc/">VLC</a> for playing videos.
